The Best of Early Autumn / Winter 2018
Ah, the end of summer is upon us. If you have kids, they have gone back to school you can finally have a wee in peace, maybe even drink a whole cup of tea at your desired temperature without having to microwave it for the third time in 45 minutes as you have been constantly called away from whatever you’re doing to tend to another request / fight / problem / small persons world ending as the WIFI connection has shorted leaving Go Jetters in some sort of suspended ultra-reality. This was me on Tuesday with all three still not back at school, and This Kid having morphed into a character from Kevin and Perry.
The nights have started to creep in, leaves are turning brown and scattering the pavement and I can finally wear a jumper with peace of mind that I'm not going to get a vigarious sweat on within half an hour. I love this time of year, I love the change in the air, the crisp feeling of a cool nights breeze on the back of my neck from my office window as I work late into the night, the start of proper cooking again, roasting things in the oven, simmering pots of umptious stock based goodness on the stove and the excitement if the impending newness from the interior Autumn and Winter 2018 collections.
September brings a new feel to everything, even if you don't have a child to pack back off to school. The change in temperature and people’s moods signifies a time for change, to start a new. With interiors, especially in your home, starting a new can soon snowball. You think you'll just add a new coat of paint on a wall and before you know it your knee deep in Farrow and Ball colour swatches, with fired earth tile samples on order and wondering if you can eBay your sofa for a decent price so you can get another to match the new curtains you just couldn't live without but now don't go with your dark, modern, scandi themed room.
The easiest way to bring a new lease of life into your home for free is to move your existing pieces around. Pictures and paintings in different settings change the mood f a room, displace the normal flow of your rooms by moving furniture away from walls and into spaces so that you have to navigate them and not simply move around the square box of space they have created as you've lined them all against the parameters if your walls. Cluster a few mirrors together in your hallway to maximise the disappearing light and think about digging out those old dust tea lights that are in the kitchen clogging up your crap draw and making it hard to open, (everyone has a crap draw right? Where Calpol syringes, Sellotape, match boxes, random plastic bag ties and the infamous Ikea tea lights go to die?
If after a re-gig you are still hunkering for some newness in your life, then below is what I feel are the best of the early Autumn / Winter 2018 interior buys.
If you have cash to splash this season or and want a cool, trendy but never out of fashion rug / floor runner then you won't go wrong with Abigail Ahern's collection for Roger Oates. Staying true to Abigail style, the collection is muted, dark and moody, perfectly fitting for the oncoming months.
Modern Luxury along with our love affair for velvet will continue to be hot news in 2019. This chest of draws has classic brass capped legs and the matte racing green finish is easy to incorporate into even the most paired back interior.
Mustard is going to be an on trend colour for 2019 and this lamps is an absolute beauty that will see you through the trend phase in 2019 and sit looking perfectly timeless in your home for years to come.
Modern Scandi style is a trend that never goes out of fashion, think natural fibres, muted nude colour pallet with splashes of deep blues, greys and stone. This Ikea chair ticks the natural and colour boxes, complete with a a jewel coloured sheep skin rug and you have the modern scandi trend nailed.
